The spider chart created in COMPASS compares our competitors' products based on four values: fossil fuel use, freshwater eutrophication, GWP, and water consumption. Fossil fuel use denotes the amount of fossil fuels, such as oil and natural gas, used in the production and distribution of the package. Freshwater eutrophication is a measure of the package’s manufacturing on freshwater systems, specifically how they contribute to algal blooms and nutrient excess in aquatic systems. GWP refers to the phrase “global warming potential” meaning the amount of thermal energy the greenhouse gasses emitted by the production process absorbs. Finally, water consumption simply refers to how much water the manufacture of each package takes. Both the Tostitos and Lunchables packaging result in similar values for fossil fuel use, and global warming potential (although Tostitos was slightly higher). Lunchables also resulted in a much higher contribution to water eutrophication than Tostitos. Various stages of their production, distribution, and disposal may contribute to water eutrophication through nutrient runoff, pollution, and waste generation. Tostitos’ score showed a larger contribution to water consumption than Lunchables. We are dedicated to reducing these impacts through alignment with UN Goals 12 and 17- design for responsible production, and partnerships along our supply chain to achieve our goals. This means sourcing from recycled materials, proper labeling and recycling instructions, as well as consumer education campaigns.
