Senior Capstone - Aluminum Can SIOC Project
Project type
Package Design - Structure and Graphics
Date
Spring 2026
Location

My senior Capstone project involved designing a Ship-In-Own-Container (SIOC) solution for a 12-pack of 12-oz aluminum beverage cans. The project was focused on damage prevention in an e-commerce distribution environment. The structural design includes a partition system to prevent can-can abrasion. The SIOC system integrates the existing corrugate tray from the shrink-wrapped-tray packaging matrix. With the removal of the shrink film and insertion of partitions, the SIOC can be slotted over the system and sealed. The beverage brand chosen for the graphics was Olipop. Two multipacks of cans were mocked up graphically. The Fruity Fun pack draws on pre-existing Olipop multipack graphics, and the Mocktails package is a concept line extension that uses existing Olipop flavors. Originally, two structural solutions were created. These solutions are displayed in the attached videos. The solution with the partitions not integrated into the box dieline was our final product, as it was able to pass ISTA 3L distribution testing.
